Following the season-ending ACL tear of veteran starter Walt Harris, the 49ers wasted no time in replacing him. Former Ram, Lion and Bronco Dre' Bly was signed today to a one-year deal for the veteran minimum of $845,000. The 5'10 186 lb Bly has been a bit of a gambler throughout his career, making plenty of plays on the ball with interceptions but also getting torched quite often as well. He is a two-time Pro Bowler but was released by the Broncos this off-season after two very disappointing seasons floundering in awful defenses.
With the loss of Harris, the team will likely promote Tarell Brown to starter or consider vet Shawntae Spencer, who has been nothing more than a mediocre starter in the past and is coming off an ACL tear of his own. The team could potentially also consider free agent Rod Hood, who is currently mulling over a contract offer from the St. Louis Rams, or perhaps Chris McAlister or Dre' Bly.
The 49ers signed free agent linebacker Marques Harris (Chargers) today. Listed at 6'1 231 (though he may be up to 245 now), Harris recorded 2.5 sacks and 28 tackles in 15 games (3 starts) last season rotating with Jyles Tucker filling in for the injured Shawne Merriman. He is most famous for his flip after a sack.
This isn't necessarily 49ers-related, but its certainly an end of an era... John Madden has retired from broadcasting. Quote: John Madden
It’s time. I’m 73 years old. My 50th wedding anniversary is this fall. I have two great sons and their families and my five grandchildren are at an age now when they know when I’m home and, more importantly, when I’m not... It’s been such a great ride… the NFL has been my life for more than 40 years, it has been my passion – it still is. I appreciate all of the people who are and were such an important part of the most enjoyable, most fun anyone could have… that great life with the teams, the players, the coaches, the owners, the League… my broadcasting partners Pat and Al… the production people and the fans …is still great… it’s still fun and that’s what it makes it hard and that’s why it took me a few months to make a decision.
I still love every part of it – the travel, the practices, the game film, the games, seeing old friends and meeting new people… but I know this is the right time.
According to Matt Maiocco, first round prospects Michael Oher, Andre Smith, B.J. Raji and Michael Crabtree are expected to visit within the next few weeks. Oher and Smith are considered elite tackle prospects out of Ole Miss and Alabama respectively. Oher is scheduled for Friday, April 3 while Smith is expect in this week as well. Boston College's Raji, the top nose tackle prospect in this class, would give a huge boost to the defensive front 7. Texas Tech's Crabtree, who was considered by most as the top overall prospect in this year's draft, is projected to drop out of the top 5 due to the surgery on a stress fracture in his left foot and prevented him from working out. He is considered far and away the best wide receiver prospect to come out since Calvin Johnson and Dwayne Bowe in 2007 and has received comparisons to Anquan Boldin and Terrell Owens.
An update to the Smith visit, Oakland native and former Pro Bowler Marvel Smith has been signed to a two-year incentive-laden deal worth up to $10.5 million if he stays healthy and will be the starting right tackle for 2009. On Friday, the 49ers terminated the contract of Jonas Jennings, who outside of his all-pro level 2006 season, could not stay healthy throughout his time in San Francisco.
The league awarded the 49ers with two compensatory picks for losing Kwame Harris, Justin Smiley, Marques Douglas and Maurice Hicks via free agency in 2008. Compensation is based off of the salary and playing time of the players lost. SF received a late 5th rounder and a late 7th rounder - most likely for Smiley and Harris due to both of them ending up starters for their teams and signing significant contracts. Douglas, while an impact player for the 49ers, signed a relatively small contract with the Bucs and was later cut and signed with the Ravens so he was not a factor, nor was Hicks. The team now has a total of 9 picks for April's draft.
