49ers go to 9-1; Ravens up next

Tuesday, November 22, 2011

The 49ers were victorious sunday in a 23-7 win over the Cardinals.

The game didn't look great in the beginning, with the 49ers either missing or having blocked field goals on 3 times. But they did come back and make the game a blowout.

The defense of the 49ers was the talk of the game, forcing 5 turnovers.

The team picked off John Skelton 3 times, and sacked Cardinals QB's twice.

Alex Smith again was throwing the ball more, and was successful in it. Michael Crabtree led the team with 7 catches and 120 yards.

Congratulations go out to TE Vernon Davis on his 34th career receiving touchdown, thus surpassing Brent Jones for the 49ers all-time lead in receiving touchdowns by a TE.

The 49ers have 2 injuries from the game, FB Bruce Miller suffered an concussion, while RT Anthony Davis hurt his ankle. There status are unknown at this time for this weeks game.

Now the 49ers are off to Baltimore, for a thanksgiving showdown with the Ravens. The game is being dubbed the Harbaugh Bowl, as Jim(49ers) and John(Ravens) face off in the first meeting between two brothers as head coaches.

The game is 8:20 EST/ 5:20 Pacific, and can be seen on NFL Network.

49ers edge out Giants, improve to 8-1

Monday, November 14, 2011

The 49ers came out on top of a close and hard fought game, 27-20 over the Giants. The 49ers really played a well rounded game.

The 49ers offense looked real good passing wise, Alex Smith threw for 242 yards, and 1 TD. His lone INT came when Ted Ginn Jr. bobbled a pass late in the 2nd quarter. Vernon Davis came through on a big touchdown when the 49ers were down 13-12. Davis ended with 3 catches for 40 yards. Delanie Walker was the teams leading receiver with 6 catches for 69 yards, while Braylon Edwards had 3 catches for 47 yards.

The one aspect that most people thought the 49ers would be successful was rushing the ball. Frank Gore ended with just 6 carries, with 0 yards before exiting the game. Kendall Hunter led the team with 6 carries for 40 yards, including a 17 yard TD run in the 4th quarter.

Now the 49ers defense had a solid day. They were shaky in the beginning, but came up with some key turnovers. Carlos Rogers picked off Giants QB Eli Manning 2 times. NaVorro Bowman led the team in tackles with 15, and Patrick Willis had 11 tackles, including the teams lone sack.

But the key play came on 4th down when Justin Smith batted down a pass attempt, which effectively preserved the game for the 49ers.

Another play that was key was a 2nd quarter Onside kick by David Akers which came after a field goal, and also led to another Akers field goal.

Next up are the Arizona Cardinals coming in sunday.

ESPN releases there top 50 stars at the midseason along with top up and comers

Thursday, November 10, 2011

While these rankings are for pure humor, the 49ers had 2 among the top 50, and 1 on there top 10 up and coming list.

On the top 5 were ILB Patrick Willis and DE Justin Smith, while RB Frank Gore and CB Carlos Rogers were on the just missed list.

ILB NaVorro Bowman made the top 10 up and comers, while LG Mike Iupati was the lone just missed for the 49ers. But absent was OLB Aldon Smith, but fellow rookie OLB Von Miller of the Denver Broncos made the top 10. It seems odd that a guy who has been benched previous makes it over someone who is among the leaders in sacks. And has made a tremendous difference.

But again this for mere humor.

Gore, McDonald return to practice; Willis named midseason All Pro by Lombardi

Wednesday, November 9, 2011

According to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea, RB Frank Gore and DE Ray McDonald both returned to practice today.

While Gore took part, he did has noticeable limp, and was favoring his left ankle, which he hurt in the 49ers 19-11 win in Washington.

McDonald has been out since injuring his left hamstring back in the Cleveland game 2 weeks ago. Both expect to be able to play sunday.

Also, NFL Network's Mike Lombardi has his midseason All-Pro list out, and 49ers ILB Patrick Willis was named to the team as the Inside/Middle Linebacker.

49ers get to 7-1 with a win over the Redskins

Monday, November 7, 2011

Well it wasn’t the most dominate win, but the 49ers got the job done, with a 19-11 victory over the Redskins. This is the 49ers 4th win on the east coast, and their 7th win overall. This was the first game where they didn’t score a rushing touchdown. But that didn’t mean Frank Gore didn’t get another 100+ yard rushing game, his 5th straight game with over 100 yards rushing.

Alex Smith had a good day throwing for around 200 yards, with the 49ers lone touchdown, a 30-yard strike to Bruce Miller after the 49ers forced a fumble on the previous play. Although there were some miss plays, Alex looked confident and played that way.

While the 49ers defense came up with 3 turnovers, they only sacked Redskins QB John Beck once, a week after the Bills sacked Beck 10 times. But the 49ers were all over Beck constantly, with 6 QB hits.

I really can’t find a blemish on this game, only that the 49ers should have been able to put the Redskins away, and they must be able to if they want to be considered a top team in the NFL.

The 49ers came out pretty much healthy. Only Frank Gore had a minor injury to his ankle, but x-rays were negative, and he is likely to play Sunday.

Up next is a meeting with the Giants at home, this Sunday, it is a 1:15 Pacific/4:15 Eastern start, and it will be on FOX.

Halfway point of season: Taking look at pending 49er free agents

Wednesday, November 2, 2011

As the halfway point into the 2011 season has arrived, lets take a look at the 49ers pending 2012 free agents to be.

Offensively:

QB Alex Smith- Smith has really turned it around somewhat in most minds. While he hasn't thrown much, he has been effective in those that he has thrown. Only 1 interception thus far on this early season.

FB Moran Norris- Currently injured, and isn't likely back in 2012. I don't see much of a need for a traditional FB anymore now-a-days.

WR Braylon Edwards- Just came back from surgery, and looked real good in the victory over Cleveland. If he keeps it up look for an extension in the offseason.

WR Joshua Morgan- His season came to an abrupt end during the Buccaneers game, when he broke his leg. That withstanding, I fully expect the 49ers to bring Morgan back in 2012.

WR Brett Swain- Not much here, hasn't played much, if any at WR, so expect him to be expendable.

WR/RS Ted Ginn Jr.- After reducing his pay, and eliminating his 2012 season on his contract, Ginn has been on fire. Ginn had 2 amazing returns for touchdowns on opening day, including a 102-yard Kickoff Return. Ginn has proven he is worth keeping, now lets hope we don't have to get into a bidding war for his services.

TE Justin Peelle- Mainly a blocking TE, Peelle has shown some nice traits thus far. He has made some nice blocks that has opened holes for Frank Gore. I could see the 49ers giving him a 1-year deal with him competing with the returning Nate Byham for a spot on the roster.

RG Adam Snyder- Snyder has finally looked comfortable out there. He is worth a shot at bringing back, but we could see a bidding war for him. Thus I think if offered right he is gone.

RG Chilo Rachal- Hasn’t lived up to his 2nd-round pick back in 2008. He just can’t seem to block effectively on both passing and running plays.

OT Alex Boone- One of a few players who is virtually guaranteed to be back, as he is a exclusive rights free agent. Plus he has shown to be solid, and it is worth a possible 3-year deal.

Defensively:

DE Will Tukuafu- The only member on the Defensive Line who is a free agent to be. As like Boone, he is a exclusive rights free agent. He will be tendered a 1-year deal, with a shot at a backup DE roster spot.

OLB Ahmad Brooks- He has 4 sacks thus far on the early season, and should be a major priority to re-sign. It’s hard to imagine Brooks came from the Bengals, and was waived by the 49ers at one point. But he has shown he has the want to be a top notch OLB.

ILB Blake Costanzo- I can’t tell you great of a signing this has been. He is clearly a leader out there on special teams. He is on a 1-year minimum contract and is a must to be extended.

ILB Larry Grant- The former 2008 7th-round pick of the 49ers returned to the team in the offseason, and has played good. He is a scheduled restricted free agent, and I can see the team placing the lowest tender on him.

ILB Tavares Gooden- He hasn’t looked bad at all. He has been in there on special teams the entire season. As a unrestricted free agent to be I can see the team bringing Gooden back on a veteran minimum deal.

CB Carlos Rogers- Rogers should be our top priority heading into 2012 offseason. Heck we should extend him asap. He is the 49ers top Corner, and has played that way the whole season. The 49ers and Rogers need to get this done asap.

CB Tramaine Brock- Another exclusive rights free agent. Brock will be back, and given the chance to compete for a spot.

FS Dashon Goldson- I must say he has looked real good as of lately. He is making good tackles, and hitting hard out there. If for the right price, extend him.

FS Madieu Williams- At first I thought he would make a bigger impact than Goldson, but I was wrong. Williams has played special teams mostly, and isn’t likely back.

FS Reggie Smith- Smith isn’t playing much, which could be an indication he won’t return in 2012. He isn’t a priority.

SS C.J. Spillman- Spillman is a restricted free agent to be and should be tendered at the lowest. Spillman has been a special teams ace, always in on the tackles. Keep him around.

49ers are 6-1

Sunday, January 1, 2011

Even though this game looked closer than it should have been, the 49ers really dominated the game on defense. The 2nd-half offense just looked horrible. But the 49ers got the 20-10 victory at home against the Browns, thus moving to 6-1.

While the 49ers 2nd-half offense looked non-existent, the 49ers defense looked on par the entire game. The 49ers sacked Colt McCoy 4 times, with Ahmad Brooks getting 2 of them. The defense got off to a fast start when Brooks sacked and forced a McCoy fumble, which was recovered by Isaac Sopoaga, on the 2nd play of the game. Aldon Smith and Patrick Willis each had a sack as well.

The 49ers defense allowed just 66 yards rushing, and 290 total yards. NaVorro Bowman led the team with 11 tackles. While Dashon Goldson had the 49ers lone interception. But on the flip side Tarell Brown just didn’t look good, he had chances at key plays and couldn’t capitalize.

The surprise of the game, well surprises. Both Joe Staley and Isaac Sopoaga had their number called on passing plays, yes passing plays. Staley caught his 1 pass for 17 yards. While Sopoaga had his 1 catch go for 18 yards. Maybe the 49ers have a secret weapon or two in their arsenal.

Frank Gore had a tremendous day on the ground, rushing for 134 yards on 31 carries, and scoring the 49ers first touchdown, a 4 yard run. Michael Crabtree and Braylon Edwars led the team in receiving. Crabtree hauled in 5 catches for 54 yards, and a touchdown. While Edwards caught 4 passes for 42 yard in his return after missing several weeks with an injury.

Some may say Alex Smith didn’t look great, which is true, but he did look effective going 15/24 for 177 yards with the 1 touchdown pass. Smith looks to be improving each week, and if he leads them to the division some people might jump on his bandwagon.

The 49ers now will head to Washington, DC to play the Redskins on Sunday, which is another early game start, 10AM Pacific/1PM Eastern, on FOX.

Now I don’t want to look ahead, but if the 49ers win the next 3 weeks, and the Rams, Seahawks, and Cardinals all end up 2-8 by the end of week 11, then the 49ers will have clinched the NFC west.

49ers get the tough road win

Wednesday, October 19, 2011

After being down 10-0 early on in the ball game, the 49ers came back with 12 points and taking a 12-10 lead into half time.

The Lions, though kept on coming at the 49ers. And by the end of the game, they have a 19-15 lead right at the 2 minute warning. But while Alex Smith, who hadn’t look all impressive, finally came through, and delivered the game winning TD. Delivering a 6-yard pass to Delanie Walker, thus giving the 49ers a 22-19 lead after the made extra point.

But it wasn’t over, as the Lions had 2 last drives to make up. On the first drive, Matthew Stafford just looked off, throwing an incomplete pass on 4th down. After the 49ers couldn’t get a first down, they settled on a field goal by David Akers, giving them a 25-19 lead. And on the final drive, again Stafford looked very off, and the Lions seemed to have given up.

And after a tough and hard fought game, the 49ers came away with the win, 25-19. Thus moving the 49ers to 5-1, and the 2nd best record in the NFC.

Now lets go through who shined, and who didn’t shine.

It was clear, even though he had limited carries, Frank Gore had 3 good runs that led to points on each drive. Rookie Aldon Smith looked like the best on defense, as he had 2 huge sacks in the game. First on a safety, and then on a forced fumble.

Rookie CB Chris Culliver looked really well out there. He helped the 49ers secondary shut down Calvin Johnson, as he didn’t record a TD, after starting the season with 9 TD receptions.

Really, the only bad spots I saw was Alex Smith and his inaccurate passes. He not once, but on several occasions, overthrew Michael Crabtree. And the fact the 49ers had over 15 penalties committed. Other than those, the 49ers had a good day, yet again not allowing a 100 yard rusher, and not 1 rushing TD.

The 49ers now head into their bye week, with the Cleveland Browns heading in.

49ers are 4-1; Have huge test sunday

Friday, October 14, 2011

After a huge road victory over the Eagles and a blow out over the Buccaneers, the 49ers have run there record to 4-1.

But it has come at a price. In the closing minutes in the win over the Bucs, WR Joshua Morgan suffered what was thought to be an ankle injury, but turned into a season ending injury. A broken leg. And was placed on Injured Reserve, effectively ending his season.

The 49ers then signed former Packers WR Brett Swain to a one-year deal.

Alex Smith, while not overly impressive, has done a good job of managing the 49ers offense. And the 49ers defense has come out hitting. CB Carlos Rogers has had an interception in each of the last 3 games. And has looked like a great signing. And looks like his $4.25 million salary is well worth it.

The 49ers run game has finally gotten in roll. Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter have led the team to some great performances. While FB Bruce Miller, former DE at UCF, has shown he has made the transition smoothly.

Of other good performances, rookie CB Chris Culliver has really shown he is a great special teams player, and a heck of a cornerback. He is showing why he was the teams 3rd-round pick this past april.

The 49ers have one huge test this weekend before there bye week. They come into Detroit, and face a undefeated Lions team(5-0). Can the 49ers defense hold up and shut down Calvin Johnson. And can they get pressure on Matthew Stafford and make him make bad decision, like they did with Josh Freeman last sunday.

This should be a heck of a ball game, and a close one. Can the 49ers pull it out? Who knows, but we will find out, at 10AM pst/1PM est on FOX.

49ers win on the road

Monday, September 26, 2011

In what was a interesting and sloppy game, the 49ers beat the Bengals, 13-8.

This was a rather un-interesting game, 49ers QB Alex Smith actually had a good game. He went 20/30 for 201 yards, while he had no TDs, he also didn't have an INT.

As usual the 49ers running game couldn't get it going. Frank Gore had 17 carries for 47 yards. He also limped off the field, and his availability for next weeks game is unknown.

Rookie Kendall Hunter came in for the injured Gore and had a good game. He had a 7 yard TD run that put the 49ers up for good.

TE Vernon Davis led the 49ers in receiving, with 8 catches for 114 yards. It was a nice scene to see Davis finally get into the offensive game plan.

Outside of the opening drive, the defense had a good game. While rookie QB Andy Dalton wasn't sacked, they came up with 2 INTs. Both Carlos Rogers and Reggie Smith came up with key INTs. Smith's came at the end of the game, which sealed the victory for the 49ers.

Sorry for wait

Thursday, September 22, 2011

Been a few weeks, I would like to get back on track.

In the past few weeks we have seen the 49ers go 1-1. Week 1's vistory over the Seahawks, and a week 2 loss to the Cowboys.

In week one the 49ers front 7 came up big, with Starting DEs Ray McDonald & Justin Smith getting in on many plays, along with a surprise in OLB Parys Haralson, who had 2 sacks.

The 49ers defense seemed to be much improved, led by the front 7, they gave the Seahawks a tough time up front in the run game.

Now week 2 loss to the Cowboys in overtime at home was a heart breaker.

After being up 14-0, the Cowboys came up with 3 TD passes to Miles Austin. And in OT, Cowboys PK Dan Bailey, after missing a chip shot early on, kicked a game winning FG.

49ers QB Alex Smith, while not impressive, looked much better than week one. He seemed more confident in himself. Even without WRs Michael Crabtree & Braylon Edwards, Alex had a nice day. Hooking up with 2nd-year WR out of Arizona State, Kyle Williams for a nice TD in the endzone.

The running game, as in week one, looked as a non factor. Frank Gore just can't get it going. Whether it is him wearing down, or if it's the O-Line, they have to get it fixed.

That sums up the past 2 games.

Also some news, as WR Braylon Edwards has surgery, and is expected to be out 3 weeks.

FB Moran Norris, with a fibula injury, is likely out for week 3 in Cincinnati. And Michael Crabtree expects to play sunday.

The 49ers also signed TE Justin Peelle to be the 3rd TE last week, and the 49ers appear to be looking for potential TE/FB with the injury to Norris.

They could use more 2 TE sets, with Walker and Davis at FB type.
