7 players cut as team gets to 80 active players

Tuesday, August 30, 2011

The 49ers have announced their cuts to get down the mandated 80-man active roster.

Released players included recently signed P Sam Paulescu, who was signed for last weeks game against the Texans. This release must mean Andy Lee is fully ready to punt.

The other 6 released are were, RB Seth Smith, WR's Tyler Beiler & Kevin Jurovich, C Nick Howell, OG Donovan Edwards, and ILB Scott McKillop.

The only real surprise is McKillop. The former standout at Pittsburgh was expected to compete for a backup ILB spot.

Now the 49ers will have to cut down from 80 to 53 this coming weekend after their preseason finale at San Diego.

Mays traded

Monday, August 22, 2011

According to Adam Schefter, the 49ers have traded last year's 2nd-round bust, safety Taylor Mays to the Bengals for an undisclosed draft pick. Mays was at the bottom of the team's safety depth chart with the new regime, mostly due to his being basically useless in coverage and refusal to move to linebacker as well as general lack of passion throughout the offseason.

As a prospect Mays, who caused Trent Baalke and Mike Singletary to butt heads (with Singletary's "fysical with an F!!!" influence winning out) in the war room on live tv, graded out poorly due to concerns over poor instincts, inability to make defensive reads and poor tackling technique despite being a tremendous pure hitter with incredible speed and size.

Baalke apparently preferred Jimmy Clausen, who probably would have bit every bit the bust that Mays turned out to be. The editors at NCH primarily preferred Morgan Burnett, who ended up in Green Bay and won the starting job there before going down with a season-ending injury.

8/29 UPDATE: Matt Maiocco reported that the trade was for their 2013 7th round draft pick.

Gore frustrated; moves made

Monday, August 20, 2011

It has been reported that 49ers starting RB Frank Gore is frustrated with his contract talks, or lack their of. It is believed Gore is looking for a similar deal that the Panthers gave DeAngelo Williams.

That deal included around $21M in guaranteed money.

It is hard to believe that the 49ers would invest that type of money into a injury riddled running back like Gore.

While coming off the heels of a 17-3 win against the Oakland Raiders, in which Alex Smith played pretty good. As he was 8/13 for 126 yards. His only bad sight was his interception to Raiders Matt Shaughnessy.

Some other key moments included a one handed catch by 49ers receiver Braylon Edwards for 32 yards and 49ers running back Kendall Hunter's 57 yard TD run in the 3rd quarter.

Other than that the 49ers offensive line played better than last weeks loss against the Saints. And the 49ers defense came up with 2 interceptions, 1 by CB Tarell Brown and 1 by FS Madieu Williams.

And lastly, we saw kicker David Akers punt a few balls. The reason for that was after a botched snap by Andy Lee. In which he was injured.

On to the moves of the day.

The 49ers have waived QB Jeremiah Masoli and PK Fabrizio Scaccia. While signing P Sam Paulescu, and activating WR Dominique Zeigler off the Active/PUP list.

49ers decide against Culpepper; Sign McCown

Wednesday, August 17, 2011

The 49ers appear to have decided against signing Daunte Culpepper. And instead have signed QB Josh McCown.

McCown played in the UFL last year. Where he led the league in completion percentage.

McCown was last in the NFL in 2009 with the Carolina Panthers.

Deal is for the league minimum for his service, $810k, with a likely $50k bonus.

For cap purposes, he will only count $525k against the cap.

49ers interested in Maybin; Updated cap room for all 32 teams

Tuesday, August 16, 2011

According to Rotoworld.com, the 49ers are apparently interested in the recently released OLB Aaron Maybin.

Maybin is a former 1st-round pick of the Buffalo Bills. He was raved coming out of college as a great pass rusher. But he clearly didn't live up to that bill.

If signed, he would likely have to impress to make the squad. With the likes of 1st-round pick Aldon Smith, free agent pickup Antwan Applewhite and holdovers in Parys Haralson & Ahmad Brooks, he would be looking at an uphill climb to make the final 53 man team.

On another note, here are the updated salary cap space for the entire league. This is as of August 15th, this past monday.

Chiefs: $33 million.

Buccaneers: $29 million.

Jaguars: $28.3 million.

Bengals: $25.9 million.

Bills: $24.6 million.

Browns: $24.5 million.

Broncos: $24.4 million.

Bears: $19.3 million.

49ers: $15.6 million.

Seahawks: $15.5 million

Cardinals: $14.6 million.

Packers: $13.1 million.

Redskins: $10.9 million.

Dolphins: $9.6 million.

Jets: $9.4 million.

Patriots: $9.2 million.

Colts: $7.1 million.

Titans: $6.9 million.

Cowboys: $6.6 million.

Giants: $5.5 million.

Raiders: $5.1 million.

Steelers: $4.4 million.

Ravens: $2.8 million.

Chargers: $2.7 million.

Saints: $2.6 million.

Texans: $2.2 million.

Eagles: $2 million

Panthers: $1.7 million.

Lions: $1.1 million.

Falcons: $1.1 million.

Vikings: $380,000.

Rams: $270,000.

While these numbers look ok, NFL.com also has come out with their numbers. And their is any real difference. These numbers likely include the $3M in cap credits for 2011, which is where the teams are allowed to designate 3 players with that $1M tag. Now the qualifying is for being on the roster before the lockout ended, and having 4 or more season accrued.

49ers set to workout Culpepper

Sunday, August 14, 2011

After an poor performance from the 49ers offense, and by potential starter at QB, Alex Smith. The 49ers are set to workout free agent QB Daunte Culpepper.

Culpepper has recently reunited with his former head coach in Minnesota, Dennis Green. They reunited in the UFL, with the Sacramento Mountain Lions.

Culpepper, is the former 11th overall pick of the Minnesota Vikings back in the 1999 nfl draft.

The last time Culpepper was seen in the nfl was when he was playing with the Detroit Lions, back in 2009.

Culpepper is a three-time Pro Bowler who in 2004 set a single-season record for most total yardage produced by a quarterback with 5,123 yards.

It would be a interesting move on the 49ers part to add Culpepper. Many 49er fans may or may not be happy about this news. Culpepper hasn't played in a few years, and he may be a bit rusty. But then again, he could possibly provide some veteran leadership on this team.

On a side note, the 49ers 2011 preseason opener in New Orleans didn't go to well. The highlights of the game were seeing rookie QB Colin Kaepernick look actually decent. He wasn't overwhelming good. But he had some nice throws.

Recently added SS Donte Whitner showed nice coverage skills. While the 1st-team Defense loked in mid-season form. If anything is shown, the 49ers defense should be in the top 15 to me. With returning most key starters, and having some youth inserted, with new veteran free agent additions, this years defense should be a very good one.

More to Come later.

Goldson re-signed; R. Smith out with torn meniscus

Monday, August 8, 2011

Humbled after passing on an earlier offer from the 49ers and choosing to test the market, Dashon Goldson re-upped with the 49ers following a visit with the Patriots on a one-year contract worth $2 million.

The re-signing comes after projected starting free safety Reggie Smith tore his meniscus on Saturday. He is expected to be out "a couple of weeks."

Whitner & Edwards added; Mays on the block

Thursday, August 4, 2011

Earlier today it was reported that hard-hitting safety Donte Whitner had agreed to terms with the Bengals. In a dramatic turn of events, the 2006 8th overall pick signed with the 49ers on a $11.75M contract with $4M in guarantees.

In addition, ProFootballTalk reports that the 49ers have sent out a league-wide email putting 2010 2nd-rounder Taylor Mays on the trading block, making it clear that the new regime isn't sold on Mays.

Wideout Braylon Edwards has also signed onto a one year, $3.5M contract. The Jets free agent has had an up and down career after being selected by the Browns #3 overall shortly after the 49ers took their own 2005 bust, Alex Smith. Edwards has also had multiple run-ins with the law, from a boatload of speeding tickets, DUI, misdemeanor assault in 2009 which he served a 180-day jail sentence and received probation, and nearly got himself into trouble again on Monday, when he egged on his cousins in a barfight where they attacked with a fork and a pocketknife.

Update: Edwards' deal is $1M base with $2.5M in incentives for 90 receptions and a Pro Bowl appearance.
