Aubrayo Franklin goes down with knee injury

Monday, August 6, 2007 | Niner Cap Hell

Matt Barrows of SacBee reports that starting nose tackle went down with a knee in jury and was carted off the field. It is believed to be a sprained knee. The injury occurred on a fake handoff during which the offensive line goes one way and quarterback breaks it back the other. "It's like the whole line collapsed and he got caught under the pile," fellow defensive lineman said.

While Franklin is out, will man the starting spot with rookie backing him up. Nolan has been very high on Franklin all offseason and expects him to solidify the nose tackle position, which over the past couple of years had been rotated between the inconsistant but freakishly strong and athletic Sopoaga, Fields and undersized ex-Niner .

UPDATE: Reports are that it is a sprained MCL and Franklin will miss the preseason.

Lets pray that only a sprained knee and out a short period of time. Come on team, stop hurting eachother. We need a complete team for the regular season to take the title.

Its just a sprain MCL. you need to get on that story quicker

With Franklin down, this will now give Joe Cohen his shot to show the team what he can (or can't) really do. Since the team will probably keep only 7 d-linemen, he was destined for the practice squad. That is more then likly how it will still end up anyway, but this will at least give him his shot to show.

Cohen wouldn't end up on the practice squad if cut. A player has to clear waivers to make the PS... someone would claim him if waived.

Has anyone seen if Sam Rayburn is any good at nosetackle in a 3-4 defense or is he playing defensive end. and rotating with Bryant Young this season?

Rayburn's backing up Ron Fields at LE. BY/MD is the other likely starter at RE.

Kwame is a FA after this season. Unless someone gets the bright idea of trying to resign him, we should be in the clear.
