49ers awarded 2 compensatory picks

The league awarded the 49ers with two compensatory picks for losing
Kwame Harris,
Justin Smiley,
Marques Douglas and
Maurice Hicks via free agency in 2008. Compensation is based off of the salary and playing time of the players lost. SF received a late 5th rounder and a late 7th rounder - most likely for Smiley and Harris due to both of them ending up starters for their teams and signing significant contracts. Douglas, while an impact player for the 49ers, signed a relatively small contract with the Bucs and was later cut and signed with the Ravens so he was not a factor, nor was Hicks. The team now has a total of 9 picks for April's draft.
