49ers QB Alex Smith's first few days of training camp haven't been impressive. His throws have been intercepted repeatedly during team drills, and he hasn't always shown off the arm strength that thrilled San Francisco's coaches. "That's part of the process," said head coach Mike Nolan, whose football future is tied to Smith's growth. "Just like the defensive backs, I want him to challenge people now so they can get better. If you are cautious about everything, you won't know your limitations. I don't put a lot of stock in (training-camp interceptions)."
Hopefully his work with QB coach Jim Hostler will eventually pay off. Alex obviously has the work ethic and intellect to improve himself, but he has a long way to go due to his poor footwork and awkward throwing motion that lacks quick release, consistancy and is not compact like your ideal arm motion should be. He obviously also needs to learn how to make reads much more quickly. Good thing this is just training camp.
