Battle for the Backfield
Wednesday, August 2, 2006 | Niner Cap Hell
More than two years removed from being given a contract and the starting nod, fans have only seen occaisional glimpses of the 2003
Kevan Barlow that earned rushed for 1024 yards while spending most of his time as a backup.
After two seasons with no 1000 yard rusher, the backfield looks open for change. Barlow is still the starter by default, but by no means is his job safe.
Frank Gore,
Michael Robinson and
Maurice Hicks are all gonna get their shot at winning the job from him.
Early reports in training camp have Barlow as being less than stellar in the time he's played. This while Frank Gore has looked like the job maybe his for the taking. Gore led the team last year with 608 yards rushing on 49 less carries than Barlow.

"What I like about Frank, is he's more north-south," Nolan said. "Hopefully more north than south."
Gore's history of injuries maybe the only thing holding him back at this point. Nolan will likely value stability in the backfield as high as everything else.
