49ers eliminated from contention

The 49ers came out looking to keep their playoff and division hopes alive following a rousing Monday Night win over the Cardinals, who defeated the Lions earlier in the day to get to 9 wins. Unfortunately, Alex Smith came out and laid an egg, with Smith reverting back to playing like well... typical Alex Smith and throwing 3 first half interceptions, one off an overthrow and the other two after staring down his reads leading to defenders jumping his passes. The offensive line also looked awful in pass protection, allowing the Eagles' front seven to penetrate too often. The defense wasn't much better, generating no pass rush and allowing the Eagles receivers to get plenty of separation.
Frank Gore, Josh Morgan and Vernon Davis were bright spots today, but could not make enough of a difference to make up for the team's overall poor play. Gore had 16 carries for 107 yards and closed in on another 1,000 yard season (942 yards after today).
With the loss, the Arizona Cardinals repeat as NFC West champions and the 49ers are officially eliminated from playoff contention. With this loss dropping the 49ers to 6-8, this also prevents the 49ers from having a winning season, marking the 7th straight season without a winning record.
