The
Asbury Park Press reports that Rutgers standout left tackle
Anthony Davis is set to visit and work out for the 49ers on Thursday, Apr 1.
Davis, considered one of the elite linemen in college football, could potentially be the franchise-quality left tackle that the 49ers have sorely needed since
Derrick Deese's longtime Niner career ended in 2003. While
Jonas Jennings was one of the league's best in 2006, he was never healthy outside of that season, and eventual successor
Joe Staley has not been any more than a mediocre starter. If the team were to select Davis, he would most likely compete for the starting left tackle job with Staley, with 2nd place taking over the right tackle spot, giving the offense sorely needed pass protection improvement on both sides of the line.
The three-time All Big East selection brings to the table top-notch athleticism and strength combined with a huge frame (6'6 323 lbs). He has excelled against top-flight pass rushers, showing great ability with a powerful punch and quick feet in his kickslide and shuffling, giving up only one sack in 2009. His pass blocking technique is viewed as good or better than fellow 2010 draft prospect
Russell Okung, who is expected to be a top 5 selection. Davis has also been lauded for his ability as a lead blocker on pulling plays.
However, he also has his share of baggage, with a history of weight issues (he started out freshman year around 360 lbs but measured in at a svelte 323 lbs at the NFL Combine), was temporarily benched twice for missing or being late for meetings, and was a no-show for the Rutgers Pro Day three weeks ago due to a tweaked hamstring and stomach virus. However, he did perform at a private workout for NFL officials earlier today with no issues.
Davis is expected to go within the top 15 picks, so he is a likely selection for the 49ers at #13, if they chose to go for an offensive tackle.
