Mays traded

Monday, August 22, 2011 | NinerCapHell

According to Adam Schefter, the 49ers have traded last year's 2nd-round bust, safety Taylor Mays to the Bengals for an undisclosed draft pick. Mays was at the bottom of the team's safety depth chart with the new regime, mostly due to his being basically useless in coverage and refusal to move to linebacker as well as general lack of passion throughout the offseason.

As a prospect Mays, who caused Trent Baalke and Mike Singletary to butt heads (with Singletary's "fysical with an F!!!" influence winning out) in the war room on live tv, graded out poorly due to concerns over poor instincts, inability to make defensive reads and poor tackling technique despite being a tremendous pure hitter with incredible speed and size.

Baalke apparently preferred Jimmy Clausen, who probably would have bit every bit the bust that Mays turned out to be. The editors at NCH primarily preferred Morgan Burnett, who ended up in Green Bay and won the starting job there before going down with a season-ending injury.

8/29 UPDATE: Matt Maiocco reported that the trade was for their 2013 7th round draft pick.
