49ers edge out Giants, improve to 8-1

Monday, November 14, 2011 | Jason

The 49ers came out on top of a close and hard fought game, 27-20 over the Giants. The 49ers really played a well rounded game.

The 49ers offense looked real good passing wise, Alex Smith threw for 242 yards, and 1 TD. His lone INT came when Ted Ginn Jr. bobbled a pass late in the 2nd quarter. Vernon Davis came through on a big touchdown when the 49ers were down 13-12. Davis ended with 3 catches for 40 yards. Delanie Walker was the teams leading receiver with 6 catches for 69 yards, while Braylon Edwards had 3 catches for 47 yards.

The one aspect that most people thought the 49ers would be successful was rushing the ball. Frank Gore ended with just 6 carries, with 0 yards before exiting the game. Kendall Hunter led the team with 6 carries for 40 yards, including a 17 yard TD run in the 4th quarter.

Now the 49ers defense had a solid day. They were shaky in the beginning, but came up with some key turnovers. Carlos Rogers picked off Giants QB Eli Manning 2 times. NaVorro Bowman led the team in tackles with 15, and Patrick Willis had 11 tackles, including the teams lone sack.

But the key play came on 4th down when Justin Smith batted down a pass attempt, which effectively preserved the game for the 49ers.

Another play that was key was a 2nd quarter Onside kick by David Akers which came after a field goal, and also led to another Akers field goal.

Next up are the Arizona Cardinals coming in sunday.
