The 49ers signed first-year cornerback Gabe Franklin, a first-year player from Boise State. He went to camp last year with the Chargers, spent a brief amount of time on the Chargers' practice squad, was cut, and finished the season on the Giants' practice squad. The Giants cut Franklin (5-foot-10, 188 pounds) in May and remained unsigned until Thursday.

Franklin was named second-team All-WAC for two straight years and had 18 interceptions in his college career, most for the Boise State Broncos in the Division I-A era and 4th in school history. He went undrafted in 2005.
